Since Tuesday morning we have been visiting our daughter Lisa in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan. Boy, we have walked a lot of miles and taken a lot of subways these last couple of days. Even though our feet are hurting and our bodies are a aching, we are so energized by the city. The people fascinating and the neighborhoods are full of such a variety of ethnic groups. We are enjoying and experiencing it all.
In Lisa's neighborhood there is a great place called the Cloisters. It's a park, public garden and museum sitting atop the highest point of Manhattan. The flowers along the garden path are full of color and scents. The path leads to a grove trees and benches overlooking the Hudson River, with a beautiful view of the George Washington Bridge. Tuesday afternoon we sat and talked for a long while, then proceeded to the Broadway district.
Lisa treated us to "In the Heights", the play that just won Best Musical at last Sunday's Tony Awards Show. It takes place in Lisa's neighborhood of Washington Heights - and so that was great. It was so exciting having dinner before the play in the theatre district. The streets were full of people attending Broadway plays and there was a sense of excitement in the air. The play was wonderful (a full house), and because it was the first performance after the Tonys, the energy of the audience and the stage actors was electrifying,' and the three of us were caught up in it. Just wonderful.
Lisa's apartment is great. You enter her complex through a courtyard of beautiful gardens. Lisa is on the 5th floor - (no elevator.......yippee for our legs). We are definitely getting our exercise. Lisa is letting us sleep in her king size bed (this time a real 'yippee' - after months in a motorhome) and outside her bedroom window she has pots of flowers and tomatoes growing. It's great to wake up in the morning, look over and see all the colorful plants right outside our window.
Wednesday we had a leisurely morning, then took the subway to Battery Park to catch the ferry to Staten Island. Would you believe the surprise to all of us that it was FREE! It took 25 minutes, and passing all the buildings in Manhattan from the ferry, plus the biggie - seeing the Statue of Liberty from the water - was great.
We then took the subway to the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. It started to drizzle but that didn't bother the Three Amigos. We really wanted to see the Rose Garden. Oh - how beautiful. The rain stopped, camera came out and we snapped away. We all sniffed a host of roses, and the special treat was seeing the cutest little baby bunnies hopping around the garden grass.
Afterwards we took the subway back to Lisa's and stopped at a great Spanish Buffet Restaurant. Oh boy - too yummy. We ended the evening with Cafe con leche (rich Dominican coffee with steamed milk).
Tomorrow we head back to Long Island to enjoy the beach and another visit with Donna's cousin Kristine and family.
Bye for now.
